Josh Banner—Stay Alive to God Part 2 [Eps 18]

Josh Banner is a spiritual director and host of the Invitation Podcast. This is part two of our deep dive interview. (Here is Part 1). We discuss spiritual direction, how contemplative prayer helped him have more fun, and ways to find deep rest in things you are already doing.

On managing time:

Plan beats no plan for artists.

On songwriting:

When I write a song, I’m listening for what makes sense, what stirs me, what stimulates me.

On contemplative prayer:

Once I discovered this contemplative practice, I started laughing more and I used the word “fun.” I’ve probably used the word “fun” more in the past seven years than in my entire life.

We can’t learn prayer by reading a book.

And some encouragement:

Most spirituality is always beginning again.

We also talk about the following:

  • A rule of life and using time well.

  • Josh’s mancrush with superheroes of the faith.

  • The summer book series with A Sunlit Absence by Father Martin Laird.

  • How to pray during covid-19 and how to start praying with 5 minutes a day.

  • Rich Mullins.

  • The connection between creativity and contemplative practice.
