My Ultimate List of Things to Prevent Creative Burnout, 2021 Edition
Here are 10 things that kept me from caving to creative burnout in 2021. Instead, I found sanity, and quite miraculously, ways to thrive, even in the midst of a pandemic and starting grad school.
Stick around and grab my BONUS resource list below which includes 4 stellar book recommendations.
Creative burnout can snatch the mojo right out from under you. It’s that exhausting, running on fumes, foggy-head-crossed-sideways-with-a-cranky-old-Daschund feeling I had the first few months of quarantine. We don’t want that for anybody. These resources include practical life aids, creative boosters, and stuff I simply love. So let’s get to it!
- Contemplative prayer. The Lectio 365 app soothed me to sleep with a simple examen prayer to recap the day. Mental health saver!
- Laughter. Supreme stress releaser. Comedians Tim Hawkins, John Crist, and Studio C helped me bond with my tween son. Score!
- Journaling for anxiety. I scribbled in my Casting All Cares journal a ton. Clarifying all the feelings through journaling rewires the brain. Can I get an amen?
- The 7-minute workout. I found Lucy Wyndham-Read’s workouts over the holiday and they have improved my range of motion and mood in just 3 weeks. Kickin’ it over here, ya’ll!
- Malcolm Guite’s sonnets. David’s Crown: Sounding the Psalms contains poems that coincide with each Psalm in the Bible. A powerful way to pray.
- All Creatures Great and Small. I can’t say enough about this heartwarming, series about a vet in Yorkshire. Beautiful cinematography! Try Closed Captioning if the accents are hard to decipher.
- Instacart. When grocery shopping eats up my last brain cells capable of making decisions, this is my go-to because I simply reorder last week’s food! It’s worth a try. Get $10 off your first order.
- Scripture read over me (with changeable music.) The Dwell app does this so well! (Fun fact: my son reads the books of Mark, 1 Corinthians, 1 Timothy, and 3 John on the Kids/ICB setting.)
- Aromatherapy: relaxing + environmentally friendly courtesy of Grove. My faves include the “Homemade” candle, Mrs. Meyer’s acorn spice hand soap, and Mrs. Meyer’s peppermint lotion. New customers get a free gift set.
- Icons. No, not digital ones. Icons are an ancient liturgical art form perfect for reflection with God. I particularly love Lyuba Yatskiv’s modern icons.
